This Sunday marks the 5-year anniversary of my hosting Subculture Shock, so I figured I'd celebrate by honoring the music you folks most want to hear! I've compiled my playlists from the past 5 years and will be playing the artists who have generated the most requests and inquiries. Want to stuff the ballot a little bit? You have 3 days to send me your favorite artists emailed to subcultureshock@gmail.com.

Not only is this going to be an awesome show, but you have a chance to win a compilation of all these songs too! Email me your guess for who will be the most requested artist on SubShock. All correct guessers will be placed in a drawing pool to win the only copy of this compilation! Plus, there might be other giveaways too, so make sure you listen in for what will prove to be a surprising and entertaining evening!

Sam Rosenthal and Athan Maroulis are both no strangers to the Goth arena. Sam, besides being the head of Projekt Records, has wowed audiences and critics alike with Black Tape for a Blue Girl since 1986. Athan's performed in a variety of Goth/Industrial bands since 1984 including Fahrenheit 451, Executive Slacks, and Spahn Ranch, and recently joined Black Tape's lineup. Both these musicians will be phoning the studio tonight to talk about the 10 Neurotics, the latest Black Tape for a Blue Girl album to take both fans and critics by storm.

Attention Musicians: Musical Contributions Needed!

The Subculture Shock Fund Drive is coming up Sunday, September 27, giving you an excellent chance to promote your band(s).

For those who don't know, Subculture Shock is a weekly radio show occurring on WNRN, 91.9 (Charlottesville), 103.1 (Richmond), 88.1 (Staunton/Waynesboro) 95.1 (Harrisonburg) and 89.9 (Lynchburg), 95.3 (Lexington), and 94.7 (Lovingston) every Sunday from 10pm to Midnight. You can also listen to it online anywhere at http://wnrn.org and download podcasts from http://myspace.com/subcultureshock, http://facebook.com/subcultureshock, and http://subshock.livejournal.com. We attempt to showcase the best in New and Classic Goth, Industrial, Darkwave, Death Rock, EBM, Synthpop, etc. This is a completely volunteer show; none of us are paid, we just do it because we love the music. However, it takes money to keep the show on the air, and we get it through these fund drives.

So, here's how we can help you while you help us. Donating some of your music to SubShock guarantees 1) We'll play it on the air and 2) Pledgers to the station will have a chance to receive your stuff as a premium for their pledge. Any information about your band you give us will be passed along to our pledgers.

And before we get into this, I'll let you know that SubShock is often one of the highest grossing "Specialty Shows" during a fund drive. It's quite normal for us to have numerous pledgers and raise an average of $1100, at the very least (last drive we had over $1200 in pledges). If you donate something to us, chances are someone will get it.

There are two ways you can contribute to the fundraiser. You can choose to do one or both, as we'll take all you're willing to give.

The SubShock Compilation: Everyone who donates at least $10 to the station during the Subculture Shock Fund Drive gets a complimentary mix-cd containing tracks by the artists we play. This is a great opportunity for bands that don't have complete CDs but do have a track or two ready to still get their music into the hot little hands of a listener. This is also good for bands that want to have "collector's items" out there, as this Comp is often a breeding ground for rare mixes, previously unreleased tracks, covers, etc. We play a wide variety of music on SubShock, and are very nondiscriminatory if your act falls anywhere near the boundaries of Goth/Industrial/etc. Chances are, you send us a track, it'll end up on the compilation. We'll also try to include a card with every CD containing each band's contact information.

Premiums: Another way you can be a huge help is by donating some merchandise that can be given as Premiums for larger pledges (The lowest dollar amount someone must give for a premium is $25 for a student, and prices will vary depending on what merch is given to us). This can be anything from CDs to T-Shirts, whatever and however many you deem appropriate. Once again, by donating anything you're guaranteeing we're going to pimp the hell out of your band.

The fund drive is Sunday, September 27, so we're asking that all tracks for the SubShock Comp be delivered by Thursday, the 24th to give us a couple days to make the discs, and all merch be at the station by Saturday September 26 so we can have a pretty good tally of what we've got. If you have merch you want to give but cannot make the deadline, let us know and we'll work something out.

You can mail merchandise, CDs, etc. to the station directly at 2250 Old Ivy Road Suite 2, Charlottesville Virginia, 22903. Just address it to Patrick Allen, and/or Subculture Shock. Tracks for the SubShock Comp (along with any questions) can also be emailed to subcultureshock@gmail.com. Try to make them as high-quality MP3s as you can send (192 kps at the LEAST).

I have two apologies to make here. First, I apologize for the lateness of this post. This is due to the second apology, namely the missing podcasts for June 28 and July 5. Unfortunately, certain station equipment malfunctioned during both shows, causing serious errors to come across in the podcasts. I've spent the past month trying to fix those errors, but I realize now that, though it could be done, it would delay the posting of non-corrupted podcasts even longer. So, instead, we're skipping those for now. If I get enough requests for the podcasts that DO have errors, I'll post them without trying to fix them. Otherwise, enjoy the shows that ARE available!

Tonight: SubShock's Patrick Allen spins some Old School Goth at Umlaut!

Probably the biggest complaint about the state of Goth Clubs today is that lack of goth in the clubs. Well, if you've ever complained about clubs not being what they used to be, tonight is your night! DJ Patrick Allen of WNRN's Subculture Shock and DJ Balfour will fire up the wayback machine and spin four hours of 80s and 90s Goth/Industrial! So if you miss the good old days of Goth Clubs, show up Tuesday! This is a trial run, and if it works, Umlaut may throw these type of events more often. It's all up to you.

And of course, bring two people who've never been to Umlaut and you get in free! Plus, since Umlaut is twice a month now, remember to come out on the 26th for the current era of Goth, Industrial, and EBM with DJ AudioRapture!
